Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
I. Environment and Resources
The Harvard-Thorndike
Clinical Research Center (CRC) provides the environment and resources to carry
out research on the causes, treatment, care, and cure of human diseases. The
goal of the CRC is to enable clinical investigators to perform their research
using modern techniques of study design, data acquisition, and data analysis,
while maintaining the high standard of patient care for which the Beth
Israel-Deaconess Medical Center is known. The CRC gives priority to NIH-funded,
foundation funded and investigator initiated research but studies funded by
industry and other sources also are welcome.
The Harvard-Thorndike General Clinical Research Center at Beth Israel-Deaconess
Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, is located on the East campus 8th floor of the
Feldberg Building. The Patient Care unit is on the 8th floor of the
Feldberg Building. And the Administrative offices are located on the 8th
floor of the Gryzmish Building. Funding for the Beth Israel Deaconess CRC
derives from an institutional grant awarded by the National Center for Research
Resources (NCRR) within the National Institutes of Health. The CRC has
been funded at BIDMC since 1974. It has eight inpatient beds and
separate outpatient rooms and provides specialized testing related to a variety of
protocols.
Examples of resources available to investigators include a research dual energy
X-ray absorptiometer (DXA) for the analysis of body composition and bone
density, an Exercise Physiology Laboratory, a complete dental suite, the SAFE
(Syncope and Falls in the Elderly) Laboratory, a GYN exam room, and facilities
to measure body composition and anthropometrics. The CRC also maintains a
metabolic research kitchen and sample processing laboratories.
The CRC provides a wide array of
services and facilities to investigators who have privileges in the institution.
These include bed and board for subjects in research protocols, routine and
specialized nursing care, routine and specialized nutrition services, assistance
with specimen collection and measurements, facilities for specimen analyses,
biostatistical assistance, informatics assistance and assistance with report
writing and publication.
