III. Personnel

Alvaro Pascual-Leone, MD, PhD, Program Director, Professor of Neurology, has overall administrative and scientific responsibility for the operation of the Beth Israel Deaconess CRC. He also serves as a resource for investigators seeking to do research in the CRC. Dr. Pascual-Leone holds appointments as a Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School, Adjunct Professor in Psychiatry and Neurobiology at Boston University, and in Cognitive Neuroscience at the Faculty of Arts and Science at Harvard University. He is a member of the Division of Behavioral Neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. In addition to his role in the CRC, Dr. Pascual-Leone is Director of the Berenson-Allen Center for Noninvasive Brain Stimulation. His clinical research interest is in understanding neural plasticity at a systems level as the reason for development and learning, the cause of disease, and as a mechanism of functional recovery of the nervous system. Dr. Pascual-Leone’s work explores the possibility of using non invasive modulation methods such as TMS and tDCS for clinically relevant therapeutic effects in neuropsychiatry and neurorehabilitation. He is assisted in his role by an Associate Program Director, Steven D. Freedman, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Medicine, and by two Assistant Program Directors, Janet Mullington, PhD, Associate Professor of Neurology, and Christos Mantzoros, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine.

Mitchell T. Rabkin, MD is the Distinguished Institute Scholar in Residence at the Shapiro Institute for Education and Research and a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He serves as the Chair of the CRC Scientific Advisory Committee. In addition, the SAC has two Vice Chairs: Lachlan Forrow, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine and Murray Mittleman, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine.

Shiva Gautam, PhD, Associate Professor of Medicine, the CRC Biostatistician (617-667-0453), provides assistance with experimental design, data analysis and interpretation. All CRC applications are reviewed for appropriateness of study design and sample size by the biostatistician.

Michelle Beck, Administrative Manager (617-667-4269), is responsible for administrative aspects of the CRC. She advises and supports staff and investigators regarding conduct of clinical research in the CRC. She provides and maintains grant and budget information, manages the resources of the Center and maintains liaison with NIH, while providing the record keeping mandated by NIH.

Linda Godfrey-Bailey, MSN, APRN, BC, Nurse Manager (617-667-3354), oversees patient activity in the CRC and provides direction to the CRC nursing staff. She provides assistance to investigators in all aspects of study conduct on the patient unit.

Joanna Radziejowska, MS, RD, LDN, Chief Bionutritionist (617-667-3586), actively participates in the planning, development, conduct and analyses of the nutrition aspects of research protocols. She reviews and assists investigators with all nutrition and dietary aspects of protocols submitted to the CRC. Her staff is trained in the production and service of metabolic balanced diets, calculated, constant, therapeutic, controlled nutrient and test diets.

Michael Menconi, PhD, Core Laboratory Director (617-667-1824). The core laboratory provides immunoassays and non-routine laboratory tests required for protocols using the CRC. The director assures quality control of assays and assists in the development and implementation of new assays.

Phillip Dickerson, BSEE, Informatics Core Director (617-667-4194), is responsible for the overall operation of the computer systems which consist of a variety of local area networks, work stations, microcomputers, and software systems available to CRC and other researchers throughout the Beth Israel Deaconess community. In addition, he works with investigators to review their data management needs and works with them in development of data storage options and database building for their CRC protocols.

Claire Migliero, Unit Coordinator (617-667-3351), acts as receptionist and schedules inpatient and outpatient appointments. She assists in the coordination of study related activities and assures smooth functioning for study participants, investigators and staff.
