| With
varicella-zoster virus reactivation, clinically known as "shingles,"
HIV-infected persons may experience recurrent or disseminated
cutaneous disease. Rarely the infection may spread to internal
organs. Diagnosis is made by the clinical appearance of skin lesions
and can be confirmed by viral culture or direct fluorescent antibody
(DFA) testing. Treatment consists of oral acyclovir or famciclovir.
