henselae
has been recognized as the causative agent of bacillary angiomatosis
in HIV-infected patients. This condition is characterized by a
proliferation of blood vessels in the skin and internal organs.
Skin lesions are nodular and red or purplish in color, and may eventually
ulcerate and drain. Diagnosis is made by biopsy, and treatment
consists of a prolonged course of an oral macrolide antibiotic
such as erythromycin or azithromycin. |
