JC virus causes progressive multifocal
leukoencephalopathy (PML), an infrequent progressive demyelinating central
nervous system disease in patients with advanced
HIV disease. Symptoms include dementia and a wide variety
of focal neurologic abnormalities. MRI scan shows nonenhancing white matter lesions.
No treatment has been demonstrated to be
effective for this condition, but combination antiretroviral therapy may
be beneficial. |
