BIDMC Research Chemical Inventory

Updated for FY2009

The Boston Fire Department requires that all labs register on an annual basis. Part of the registration process includes providing a detailed inventory of all hazardous chemicals in each lab. The chemical inventory will be captured using a web form. This electronic form should be used to enter all hazardous chemicals.  For questions about the process, please contact Will Decaneas, Research & Academic Affairs at wdecanea@bidmc.harvard.edu or 667-4195. For technical issues with the web form, please contact Academic Computing Support at research@bidmc.harvard.edu or 667-8415.

Reference materials: While we can not give you a complete list of items that must be reported, we can provide two reference documents.  First is a list of hazardous chemicals that must be reported; second is a list that do not need to be included.  Items not on either list must be determined to belong on the inventory or not; for assistance, contact Dan Dancause, Environmental Health & Safety ddancaus@bidmc.harvard.edu or 667-8815.

Instructions for completing the Inventory form:

  • Click on the Chemical Inventory form link below to open the chemical inventory web page

  • All research lab rooms are linked based on the space databas, if your room or PI Listing is missing please send us an email with the building, room number, room use and PI Name (research@bidmc.harvard.edu)

  • Select the Room and PI to see a list of chemical contents in the room (when item count > 0).  The page will allow you to add, edit, or delete chemicals in this room, automatically updating the Last Update field.

  • When Editing a chemical be sure to enter the total amount of that material in the room, select the correct unit of measure and click Save.

  • When Adding a chemical the Select/Change button will list all the hazardous and currently inventoried chemicals.  If you need a new chemical added, please send us an email with chemical name  (research@bidmc.harvard.edu)

  • When selecting a room with 0 items, you will be presented with a form with 2 options, Add Chemicals (follow steps above) or the statement that the room has no hazardous chemicals stored in it.  Click the I agree button and the system will track this verification by user login and date.  You can revisit this form any time and override the statement by clicking Add Chemicals.

NOTE: Inventories for FY08 rooms have been archived due to the massive research lab moves. If you would like to move your old inventory to a new room (or even the same room), please email research@bidmc.harvard.edu and send us the "old room number" moves to "new room number" and we will migrate existing records.

CLS Chemical Pharmacy

CLS is a high rise (>10 stories) building requiring strict limits on the amount of hazardous chemical stored on a floor.  To support the research labs in quickly ordering small quantities of chemicals, BIDMC started a chemical pharmacy that will stock quantities of commonly used hazardous chemicals.  The pharmacy is staffed on M-W-F from 11:30AM to 3:30PM. To order chemicals from the pharmacy, open linked Excel ordering sheet, complete the form, save the file and email to Triumvirate at clschemicals@bidmc.harvard.edu.
